Headaches are one of the most common health complaints people experience. Although headaches can range from irritating to incapacitating, most are not associated with a serious illness. However, the occurrence of a new type of headache requires medical evaluation to determine the cause.

Common type of Headache:

Tension headaces - Are the most common type of headache. They are often accompanied by tension in the muscles of the head, neck, and shoulders. The pain frtrom tension headaches is a constant, dull pain and is often described as a band squeezing around the head, like a tight hat. The pain is not incapacitatings and usually occurs on both sides of the head. Tension headaches come on gradually and can last from hours to days.

Migraine headaches - Are less common than tension headaches. They more common in women than in men and can debilitating. Migraines are  episodic disabling headaches that may recur over years. Migraine sufferrs of ten become nauseous and are sensitive to light and loud sound during an episode. Some people can tell when they are about to have a migraine headache because they experience certain symtoms, collec an aura, before the headache occurs. These symptoms can include visual disturbances such a seeing sports or stripes and blurred vision.
Cluster headaches - Are less common than other kinds of headaches and occur more often in men than in women. Cluster headaches come on suddenly with severe pain centred around one eye, which becomes watery, Nasal congestion may occur on the same side of the face.These headaches usually lost about 45 minutes and can occur several times a day. Cluster headaches typically occur over a period of weeks or months, known as a cluster period, and then disappear for weeks or months until the next cluster occurs.
Tension headaches can be treated with pain relievers like aspirin and acetaminophen. Stress management and relaxation exercises may also help prevent tension headaches.

Drinking plenty of fluids Migraine headaches can be treated with nonprescription and prescription pain medication. Prescription medications to prevent migraine headaches are also available for persons who have frequent migraines.

Prescription medications are available for treating and preventing cluster headaches. Avoiding alcohol is also recommended because it can tyrigger cluster headaches in individuals whol have  them.

Caffeine, found in coffee, tea and calas, as well as more "hidden" sources like chocolate and some medications including Anacin. Excedrin and Actifed, can exacerbate headaches.

Nearly everyone gets them from time to time, but they need't make life a complete pain.

There are four main headache triggers : muscle tension due to stress to poor posture : inflammation of the sinuses brought on by a cold or allergy : high blood pressure made worse by exertion or anger, and constriction and dilation of blood vessels triggested by food or chemicals and leading to a migraine.

How can you tell which one you's have got?

A crushing brand of pain round the head, plus aching shoulders and neck means it's probably a tension headache. Message neck and shoulders to relieve immediate tension and try find ways to tackle stress.

A pounding pain all round the head may mean high blood pressure. Take an aspirin or paracetamol - if your headaches are frequent, your GP may prescribe a drug to lower your blood pressure.

Pain behind the eyes or across the forehead or cheekbones signals sinus p;roblems which require a decongestant and painkiller. If your sinuses are infected, you'll need an antibiotic from your GP. No one who's suffered one can be in any doubt about a migraine : symptoms are one-sided throbbing ofter with nausea, made worse by movement. Relax in a dark room and breath slowly. If painkillers don't help, see your GP for a prescription drug.
